Millions of Americans, including the residents of Washington, live in the danger zone near a nuclear power plant. In the event
of an accident like we saw at the Fukushima plant in Japan, we're not ready.
The risks are real. Both the West and East Coasts are at risk for a major earthquake like the one that hit Fukushima. Solar
storms can shut down entire electrical grids. And yet evacuation plans have not been updated to include population growth
and on-site storage of radioactive waste.
That's why I created a petition on SignOn.org to the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama, which says:
The U.S. government told all Americans within 50 miles of Fukushima to evacuate when the Fukushima disaster occurred. Many
of our reactors are operating beyond the period they were designed for. On-site backup power is not sufficient for major
outages. Unprotected on-site storage of tons of radioactive waste has great potential to cause harm if attacked. Realistic
evacuation plans are needed.
