"Japan's non-nuclear decision"
Japan's Prime Minister Yoshiko Noda announced on September 14 that his
nation will end reliance on nuclear power by 2040.
However, the government plans to complete several reactors that are
already under construction. Japan has already restarted two of its
reactors shuttered following the Fukushima crisis, and will likely
restart many more of them by the end of 2013. The launch of an
independent nuclear safety agency this month is likely to add
credibility to continued use of nuclear energy.
Japan's nuclear phase-out policy as announced by Prime Minister Noda
would leave decades of time for future political decisions that would
undo the policy. And there are plenty of reasons why that might happen.
