Nuclear Accidents

“The Next Chernobyl?,” by Khosrow B. Semnani and Gary M. Sandquist (Op-Ed, nytimes.com,
Jan. 3), rightly calls attention to the Bushehr nuclear power facility
in Iran and raises important issues regarding operational safety.
Nuclear safety is clearly of utmost import, and everything should be
done to ensure that the facility is optimally designed and operated and
that there is appropriate emergency response planning. However, the
writers imply that there have been catastrophic consequences of the
