NEI Video Offers Inside Look at New FLEX Safety Equipment at Nuclear Plants

Last week the Nuclear Energy Institute released this video explaining its FLEX plan to improve preparedness for beyond-design-basis accidents at nuclear plants. The industry's favored approach to post-Fukushima safety enhancements focuses on providing critical backup equipment at nuclear plants and at regional centers. This video offers a review of the FLEX approach and shows some of the equipment that could help keep a reactor safe in the event of a station blackout.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is still developing the government's new rules in response to the accidents in Japan. While it has acknowledged the safety benefits of the FLEX measures, the agency may also propose additional safety regulations. It has already ordered the installation of hardened vents at certain types of reactors. View Video >>>>

Veolia to Branch Into Nuclear Remediation Business After Water Treatment at Fukushima

Paris-based conglomerate Veolia Environment announced an agreement Tuesday with a French government agency to remediate nuclear sites.

Veolia had not counted nuclear waste cleanup among its subsidiaries' primary markets before 2011, when it partnered with Areva to help create a water treatment system for the severely damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan. In a release, the company said its Asteralis subsidiary will assist the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission in dismantling and remediating a plutonium reprocessing plant in Marcoule, France, and a laboratory in Cadarache. DOE Announces New Timeline for Interim, Permanent Nuclear Waste Disposal

The Obama administration is preparing to present a new plan for spent nuclear fuel to Congress that envisions an interim storage site opened by 2025.

The proposal would implement ideas proposed last year by the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future, which recommended that spent fuel currently stored at power plants be moved to one or more temporary storage sites hosted by communities that want them. So far, groups in New Mexico and South Carolina have formed to advocate for construction of interim repositories in their states, while Idaho's state government has begun a review of its policies restricting nuclear waste shipments. Switchyard Fire Trips Reactor at South Texas Project

Fire in a main transformer resulted in a reactor trip and an unusual event declaration at a reactor near Houston Tuesday.

The transformer at unit 2 of the South Texas Project failed at about 4:40 p.m., according to an event report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Although the onsite fire brigade extinguished the resulting flames in the switchyard within 16 minutes, the incident took out power to busses supplying reactor systems, which the report indicated resulted in a partial loss of offsite power. The reactor tripped from full power, and two emergency diesel generators energized the affected circuits.
