Featured letter: Quakes pose real risks to nuclear plants

Federal regulators on Tuesday sent notification to owners of five nuclear plants — including the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Lacey — a warning about potential problems with the proper insertion of control rods if there was an earthquake. There could be a problem shutting down the reactor during an earthquake because tremors would make it difficult for the control rods to be properly engaged. The control rods stop the fission process, and shut down the reactor. This is the second notification.
