EDF Chief Confirms Company To Bid On Areva's Nuclear Arm

Electricity de France Chief Executive Officer Jean-Bernard Levy confirmed Tuesday that the company, which operates more nuclear power plants than any other, is preparing a bid for the Areva’s reactor division, which analysts say is valued at about $3.3 billion.

Levy said there was “a certain logic” to the concept of EDF bidding on Areva’s reactor division.

Areva’s prominence in the industry made it all the more vulnerable to losses in the post-Fukushima Daiichai era, when many countries pulled back severely from their nuclear plant ambitions. But Areva has been beset by delays in construction projects in Finland and France and recently announced it had found a high-carbon anomaly in a containment vessel similar to one used at the construction project in Flamanville, France, which is now undergoing tests to see if the steel there is also flawed.
