Two Steps Closer to National Consolidated Interim Storage Facility

Progress made on the interim option in the U.S. used nuclear fuel storage conversation …

On May 20, 2015, WCS and AREVA announced the signing of terms of agreement to develop a Consolidated Interim Storage Facility (CISF) in Texas to accept and store used nuclear fuel from U.S. reactors. This agreement details AREVA’s role and activities, including as the exclusive subcontractor for the design, development, construction, operation, and maintenance of the CISF project, and the transportation of used nuclear fuel and greater-than-Class C (GTCC) waste for the project.

On May 21, 2015, AREVA announced an agreement with NAC International to jointly support the licensing, design, construction and operation of the CISF project in Texas, led by WCS. Combined, AREVA and NAC represent 62 percent of existing dry storage systems in the U.S., including 78 percent of used nuclear fuel stored at sites where there is no longer an operating nuclear facility.
