Today, the U.S.
Senate Appropriations Committee (SAC) released drafts of all 12 annual
spending bills for 2021, setting up negations for a deal ahead of the
December 11 deadline to keep the government running. Both Senate
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) have indicated that they'd like to finish FY2021 appropriations in the lame-duck session.
For the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the SAC Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development spending bill includes $1.5 billion for nuclear energy research, development, and demonstration activities, an increase of
$11.9 million above
FY2020 enacted and
$325.4 million above the budget request. The bill also continues funding for the Advanced Reactors Demonstration Program.
This spending bill also includes $19.8 billion for DOE nuclear security programs, an increase of $3.1 billion above FY2020 enacted and an increase of $53 million above the budget request. This includes: $15.6 billion for Weapons Activities; $1.68 billion for Naval Reactors; and $2.1 billion for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation.
