Invitation to FCWMD Members

 

Dear Fuel Cycle and Waste Management Division (FCWMD) Members: I hope that you all are managing to effectively work or otherwise enjoy your way through the year never to be forgotten: 2020! I also hope that you have signed up for the ANS Winter National Meeting (November 16-19), which will take place virtually like the ANS Annual Meeting did in June. The Annual Meeting had a record sized crowd of over 2,000 registrants and we hope to keep up the momentum and have an equally sized or larger crowd for this meeting. If you have not had a chance to register yet please consider doing so at https://www.ans.org/meetings/wm2020/. If you would like to see what the FCWMD is offering for this meeting before registering, then please consider attending our FCWMD Program Committee meeting this week as noted below. Timed to nearly coincide with the Winter meeting, the FCWMD will be hosting its two regular committee meetings plus new this year a virtual social event, where we will be trying out something new – lightning talks. As a member of the FCWMD, I invite you to attend and participate in all or any of the following meetings: 1.       Thursday (November 5) from 4:00 to 5:00pm (EST) the Program Committee will meet via Zoom (see attached Agenda) and will discuss: a.       How the FCWMD’s paper and panel sessions did at the annual meeting (feedback requested on how it went and how it can be improved) b.      What the FCWMD’s paper and panel sessions will look like at the Winter Meeting c.       What the FCWMD is considering for paper and panel sessions at the next Annual and Winter Meetings (feedback on topics requested) d.      Status of FCWMD’s sponsored conferences (Global & IHLRWM) e.       This meeting is a great way to get involved in the division by providing us feedback on what you heard & saw and what you want to hear & see at future meetings 2.       Thursday (November 5) from 5:00 to 6:30pm (EST) the Executive Committee (EC) will meet via Zoom (see attached Agenda) and will discuss: a.       What ANS National has been doing… b.      What the FCWMD has been doing… c.       Discussion on FCWMD Public Position Statements, Standards, Nominations, Volunteers, etc. d.      This meeting is a great way to see the inner sanctum of the division and find your niche! We always need input on how to best serve the division and the society… plus you can add your name to the list of potential nominees (for the 2022 slate) for the great resume builder of division officer if you would like… 3.       Monday (November 16) from 6:00 to 7:30pm (EST) the FCWMD Virtual Social Event: “Lightning Talk Bingo” (associated with the ANS Winter Meeting and co-sponsored by the Young Members Group), details of this meeting will be sent out soon (as soon as we know them ourselves), but plans are for: a.       Four Lightning Talks (< 5 minutes) on topics including molten salt reactors, fuel cycle analyses, extended storage of SNF/UNF, and a topic TBD (decision on topic will occur during the above EC Meeting) b.      Concurrently a Bingo game with Starbucks prizes awarded to the first 3 who get “BINGO!” c.       Four breakout rooms with social discussions on one of the 4 lightning talks or whatever else the members want to discuss (please no politics though!) d.      Can’t vouch for how this social event will go, but to be successful we need your participation and I promise we will have experts on each of the subject matters available to talk up… Please let me (sven.bader@orano.group) know if you have any questions/comments/etc. and remember, to get the extra-worth out of your membership to ANS and to our division, we would love to hear and (maybe even) see you at our meetings/events.
