Missile Interceptor Fails to Take Down Target

A U.S. missile defense test over the Pacific Ocean yesterday ended unsuccessfully when the long-range interceptor was unable to eliminate its intermediate-range ballistic missile target, Reuters reported (see GSN, Feb. 2).
"The Missile Defense Agency was unable to achieve a planned intercept of a ballistic missile target during a test over the Pacific Ocean," MDA spokesman Richard Lehner said in a statement without addressing possible causes for the failure.
This was the second successive failed test this year of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system -- the United States' only protection from a long-range ballistic missile attack. A test at the end of January also ended without missile interception due to problems with the radar equipment. The missile defense system has had mixed success in testing, with seven of 15 attempted missile intercepts to date ending in failure, as judged by the Missile Defense Agency.
"This is a tremendous setback for the testing of this complicated system," Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance leader Riki Ellison said in shared comments. The test failure leads to doubts about the dependability of the approximately 30 land-based missile interceptors fielded at military bases in California and Alaska, he said.
Yesterday's test initially went according to plan as the target missile launched from the Marshall Islands and the nterceptor flew from from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, according to the agency. Sea-based radar equipment operated as desired, while the interceptor was able to fire off its "kill vehicle" at the target but failed to hit the missile.
The MDA statement said the agency would carry out a thorough assessment to identify what was behind the test failure. Only after a cause has been found would another test of the system be scheduled.
The Ground-based Midcourse Defense system was developed to eliminate a small number of long-range ballistic missiles that could be carrying nuclear, chemical or biological weapons payloads. The system has components based on land, at sea and in space.
Washington has allocated more than $10 billion annually in recent budgets for various antimissile efforts (Jim Wolf, Reuters/Yahoo!News, Dec. 15).

U.S. And Japan Stage Successful Missile - Defense Test -- New York Times/Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Japanese naval destroyer equipped with a Lockheed Martin Corp Aegis ballistic missile defence system carried out a successful flight-intercept test on Thursday in a "milestone" of growing cooperation, Japanese and U.S. forces announced.

The test focussed attention on mounting U.S. missile defence ties with Tokyo even as Washington urges its NATO allies to join in a NATO-wide shield prompted largely by concerns over Iran.

Japan's interest in missile shields jumped in August 1998 when North Korea test-fired a Taepo Dong-1 ballistic missile that flew over Japan before falling in the Pacific.

Russia successfully test fires long-range missile: ministry





Moscow (AFP) Oct 29, 2010 Russia on Friday successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable Bulava intercontinental missile, the defence ministry said. The launch is the second successful firing this month after a string of embarrassing failures brought the programme to a halt for 10 months.
"The parameters of the trajectory worked out as planned and the warheads successfully landed at the Kura firing area," a defense ministry spokesman said in a statement quoted by Russian news agencies.
The missile was fired early morning from Dmitry Donskoy submarine in the White Sea in northwestern Russia, and hit the Kura firing area on the Kamchatka peninsula on the Pacific Ocean, 6,000 kilometres (3,700 miles) away.
The launch confirmed that Bulava's many failures were most likely caused by "assembly technology," said a source in the commission established to analyse the missile's production process and pinpoint what was causing it to fail.
Another launch, the 15th in all, is scheduled before the end of the year, the source said, Interfax reported. More at:

Russia successfully test fires long-range missile: ministry

Russia on Thursday successfully tested its new nuclear-capable Bulava intercontinental missile, its first successful firing for months after a series of embarrassing failures, the defence ministry said. The missile was fired from the Dmitry Donskoi submarine in the White Sea in North European Russia and hit its target in the Kura firing area on the Kamchatka peninsula on the Pacific Ocean some 6,000 kilometres (3,730 miles) away, it said.
"The parameters of the trajectory worked out as planned and the warheads successfully landed at the Kura firing area," said a defence ministry statement quoted by Russian news agencies.
The last firing of the Bulava in December ended in one of the military's worst embarrassments in recent years when the missile disintegrated early in its flight, producing a spectacular plume of light visible over Norway.
Russian news agencies said the firing was the 13th test of the Bulava. Of the last 12 test firings, only five have been deemed to be fully or partially successful.
The Bulava, which can be equipped with up to 10 individually targeted nuclear warheads, has a maximum range of 8,000 kilometres (5,000 miles).
Its incorporation into the armed forces is part of a wide-ranging military reform aimed at updating the armed forces' Soviet-era structures and equipment to bring them in line with the demands of modern warfare.
December's failed launch of the Bulava caused spectacular images in the sky above the Norwegian city of Tromso, prompting initial explanations they were caused by a meteor, the northern lights or even a UFO.
According to Russian news reports, the defence ministry has ploughed a large proportion of its procurement budget into ensuring the missile becomes the key element of its rocket forces.
