Actions in Response to the Japan Nuclear Accident

Actions in Response to the Japan Nuclear Accidenthttp://www.nrc.gov/japan/japan-info.html

the March 2011 nuclear accident in Japan to ensure that appropriate safety enhancements are implemented at nuclear power plants here in the U.S. The links below describe our activities and provide background information related to those actions.

The NRC has established the Japan Lessons-Learned Project Directorate, a group of over 20 full-time employees to focus exclusively on lessons learned from the Japan nuclear accident. These employees are experts in nuclear power plant design and operations and emergency preparedness.
For upcoming public meetings related to the Japan response and others, please see our Public Meeting Schedule.
Recent events have caused the NRC staff to modify its initial approach and schedule for developing and issuing 'Tier 1' Orders and letters requesting information under 10 CFR 50.54(f) to address some of the recommendations of the Near-Term Task Force. The plans NRC intends to issue Tier 1 Orders and 50.54(f) letters, providing Commission approval, by March 11th - the 1st anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. A variety of factors influenced the NRC staff's decision to accelerate its schedule, including recommendations from the NRC's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards and language provided in the NRC's appropriations bill that requested an expedited schedule for the Tier 1 Orders and 50.54(f) letters. This revised schedule will allow necessary improvements to US nuclear power plants to be completed earlier than originally planned.
