Radiation fears don't line up with scientific studies
The
idea that there is no safe dosage of radiation is unrealistic and
unnecessarily increases public fears when a Fukushima Daiichi-like
accident occurs, writes radiological-risk expert James Conca. The idea
that any increase in radiation exposure results in higher health risks
is not backed up by science. "The millions of nuclear workers that have
been monitored closely for 50 years have no higher cancer mortality than
the general population but have had several to ten times the average
[radiation] dose. People living in Colorado and Wyoming have twice the
annual dose as those in Los Angeles, but have lower cancer rates," he
writes. Forbes
