South Korea’s newest nuclear reactor shutdown after failure

On Sunday, the New Wolsong 1 reactor shut down at around 11:00 am, due to a power supply system failure, only 19 days after beginning its commercial operation.
Officials from the state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) said an investigation was underway to learn the exact cause of the malfunction but claimed that there is no danger of a radiation leak.
The New Wolsong 1 OPR-1000 unit, construction began in November 2007, started up and was completed in January 2012.
The sister unit, New Wolsong 2, is expected to enter commercial operation in January 2013.
