- OIG challenges NRC on safety agreements
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Office of the Inspector General is questioning the agency's supervision of safety and security, particularly concerning safety agreements with nuclear plant operators. The NRC fails to follow up on Confirmatory Action Letters, which are documents that verify if a facility has dedicated itself to respond to "significant concerns regarding health and safety, the environment, safeguards or security," the watchdog said in a report. Bureaucracy, not neglect or willful inaction, is the problem, the report added. MSNBC
