- NRC report confirms safety of dry containers, used fuel pools
Used fuel pools and dry storage containers are safe, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said in a recent report. The report confirms earlier studies from the agency and the industry -- "namely that used fuel pools are safe because of the way that they are designed and built, because the depth of the water in the pools provides an additional layer of protection, and because of the extensive emergency response procedures that are in place to mitigate the impact of serious events," said Steve Kerekes, a spokesman for the Nuclear Energy Institute.
