Canadian accident study puts risks into perspective

Study: Hypothetical nuclear accident highly unlikely to pose cancer risk
Most of the population near a severe nuclear accident would face no detectable increase in cancer risks due to radiation exposure, according to a study performed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Although the study noted the need for evacuations in the area closest to the plant, it found that beyond about a 7.5-mile zone, evacuations would be unnecessary. Researchers found that the hypothetical accident would only cause a 0.0004% increase in the likelihood of cancer development for those exposed to radiation.
