NRC: Shuttered plants can safely keep nuclear waste for 60 years
Nuclear reactors can safely keep nuclear waste for at least six decades after they are closed down, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Adequate storage capability will be implemented "when necessary," the agency said in its "Waste Confidence" revised rule. "It shows NRC's confidence in the industry's ability to manage this material and their ability to regulate it, and we can keep going forward with licensing," said Steven Kraft, senior director for used-fuel management at the Nuclear Energy Institute.
