Expert: Vogtle reactors may set example for nuclear expansion The
industry will be following the construction of new reactors at Southern
Co.'s Plant Vogtle in Georgia, said Per Peterson, chairman of the
Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California,
Berkeley. It could serve as a model for future new reactors in terms of
cost and construction schedule, and it's a chance for the nuclear
industry to show the strides it has made in the past 30 years, Peterson
said. "These new plant designs ... incorporate passive safety features,
and they do not require any electrical power to remove heat after they
shut down," he added. National Public Radio
