Proposal to shut down Diablo Canyon, San Onofre is not logical
A
proposed initiative to shut down the Diablo Canyon and San Onofre
nuclear plants in California is guided more by fear than fact, writes
risk-perception consultant David Ropeik. Opponents ignore the low health
risks as well as the benefits of nuclear energy. "[N]uclear power emits
no particulates, which are emitted from coal-fired power plants and
which sicken and kill thousands of Americans each year, according to the
National Academy of Sciences. Given the profound threat of climate
change, it's a huge plus that nuclear power generation emits practically
no greenhouse gases," he writes. Los Angeles Times
