U.S. nuclear industry is revived with new reactor projects
The
U.S. nuclear industry is growing, even though Germany and some other
nations are forswearing the technology as a result of Japan's Fukushima
Daiichi incident, observers say. For the first time in more than three
decades, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission cleared the construction of
new reactors -- and the approval of two at Plant Vogtle in Georgia was
followed with the approval of another construction project in South
Carolina. The AP1000 reactors that will be built in those locations have
greater safety margins than the Fukushima Daiichi units. The New York Times (tiered subscription model)
