Investments of at least $13 billion are required over the next 10 years to modernize the German power grid as an increasing amount of renewable power is threatening the aging 22,000-mile network, the public German energy think tank Dena said in a study.
Onshore turbines are installed in northern and eastern Germany, while new offshore wind farms are mushrooming along the North and Baltic Sea coastlines.
Dena claims some 2,240 miles of new transmission lines are needed to transport the fluctuating renewable electricity south and southwest to Germany's industrial hubs, where most of the power is needed. Dena forecasts renewables to account for 39 percent of the German power mix in 2020, up from around 16 percent today.
"Germany is right to bank on renewables," Dena head Stephan Kohler said in a statement. "But the expansion of renewables puts the energy system before great challenges. We must bring wind power from the North and Baltic Sea to consumers in the South. Conventional power plants need to be modernized and operated in a way that they complement renewables well and remain economic at the same time."
Grid expansion in Germany has been slow and tedious, with massive public opposition to new high-voltage transmission lines. In 2005 Dena urged the government to build some 530 miles of new infrastructure, but less than 60 miles have actually been built.
Kohler said Germany needs an "acceptance offensive" that communicates to the population that Germany "needs a network expansion."
Building new sub-ground lines would be less controversial, but also more costly -- up to $38 billion, Dena says.
The government's recent decision to prolong the life of the German nuclear reactors by an average of 12 years won't affect the grid expansion plan, the think tank added.
Conducted by scientists from Cologne University and the Fraunhofer Institute, the study was funded by the German government, the energy industry and the network operators.
It comes a few weeks after the European Union outlined its energy infrastructure priorities for the next two decades, saying some $270 billion has to be invested into "smart" power grids, electricity highways as well as new oil and gas pipelines.

WASHINGTON Nov 18 (Reuters) - Federal regulators on Thursday proposed reforms to make the U.S. electric grid more accessible to electricity generated by renewable energy sources, which should lower costs for consumers who want to buy clean power.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission proposed a rule requiring public utility transmission providers to allow renewable power producers to schedule their shipments of electricity over shorter time periods to better reflect the moment-to-moment changes in generation output by renewables.
Wind and solar power producers would be able to schedule transmission service in 15-minute intervals, instead of the current one-hour scheduling procedure.
"Most of the new power plants for which developers are seeking access to the grid are variable resources such as wind and solar generators," said FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff. "This proposal will help the commission to cost-effectively integrate these and other variable generators into the grid in a way that helps maintain reliability and operational stability."
The FERC's proposal would help meet the Obama administration's goal to double the amount of U.S. electricity generated by renewable energy sources.

There is talk of catastrophe ahead, depending on whom you believe, because of the threat of an electromagnetic pulse triggered by either a supersized solar storm or terrorist A-bomb, both capable of disabling the electric grid that powers modern life.

New EPA rules will erode power grid reliability, report finds

 

Energy reserves available to the power grid for peak use could be cut in half, says an industry report, as power plants are retired for noncompliance with stiffer clean-air and clean-water rules.

Four federal environmental regulations to improve water and air quality could by 2018 chop by nearly half the amount of projected reserve energy available to the US power grid, says a new report.

Nationwide, hundreds of coal-, oil-, and gas-fired power plants, with a collective capacity of about 76,000 megawatts (one megawatt provides enough power for about 750 homes), could be retired if the forthcoming rules are implemented under the fastest proposed timeline, says the report by the North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC), an industry group charged with ensuring grid reliability. A "moderate" pace of implementation would lead to a 46,000-megawatt cut in reserve generating capacity, it says.

Every hundred years or so, a solar storm comes along so potent it fills the skies of Earth with blood-red auroras, makes compass needles point in the wrong direction, and sends electric currents coursing through the planet's topsoil. The most famous such storm, the Carrington Event of 1859, actually shocked telegraph operators and set some of their offices on fire. NY sees reliable power system, but warns of risks

The possible shutdown of Entergy's Indian Point nuclear plant could threaten New York's reliability needs, according to a report by the New York ISO, the state's power grid operator. Reliability breaches could occur in 2016 if the nuclear facility's operating licenses expire in 2013 and 2015, the report added. Those violations could involve the loss of power in the New York City metro area. Reuters

Seal of the United States Department of Energy.Image via WikipediaLooking for a major new ways to harness wind, solar and other evolving renewable energy, the US Department of Energy today issued a call for advanced large-scale energy storage system technology.
The DOE said the goal of its solicitation is to identify and prove new concepts for applied research in materials chemistry, battery components, battery designs and any technologies that will lead to breakthroughs in grid energy storage.

Such technology will be focused on novel materials, electrodes, electrolytes, membranes and other components, along with new concepts for ultra low cost, high efficiency and long lasting energy storage systems. Emphasis is placed on highly innovative research proposals in areas that have the potential to have strong impact on large-scale energy storage in the future, the DOE stated.
The DOE went on to say the variable and stochastic nature of renewable sources makes solar and wind power difficult to manage.  To effectively use the intermittent renewable energy and enable its delivery, large-scale electrical energy storage is required. For example, storage systems operating near an intermittent, renewable wind energy source can smooth out wind variability and, if of sufficient scale, store off peak wind energy, the DOE stated.
Big energy storage is an effective tool to improve the reliability, stability, and efficiency of the envisioned electrical grid of the future.  This grid will be significantly impacted by new demands, such as plug-in electrical vehicles, increased use of renewable energies, and smart grid controls. Large scale storage technology could shave the peaks from a user or utility load profile, increase asset utilization and delay utility upgrades, decrease fossil fuel use and provide high levels of power quality, while increasing grid stability. In addition, distributed energy storage near load centers can reduce congestion on both the distribution and transmission systems, the DOE stated.
