GAO is urged to probe Energy Dept.'s funding of USEC
The
Government Accountability Office should investigate why the financially
burdened firm USEC continues to receive funding from the Department of
Energy, said Reps. Edward Markey, D-Mass., and Michael Burgess, R-Texas.
"We've been told this earmark is all about avoiding risk to our
national security, but the real [risk] of this nuclear bailout is for
taxpayers who will be on the hook for questionable government handouts
that are worth more than the entire company," Markey said. USEC secured
$44 million from the department for its uranium enrichment project in
Ohio earlier in the year. Platts
