Opinion: U.S. stands to benefit from MOX fuel
Converting
weapons-grade plutonium into fuel for nuclear plants is safe and
reasonable, writes James McGovern, an energy consultant to the
government and industry. About 1.1 tons of plutonium that is converted
into mixed oxide fuel for reactors can generate approximately 18 billion
kilowatt-hours of electricity, which would be sufficient to power 3
million homes for a year. "We have a great deal of surplus plutonium in
the U.S. weapons stockpile, and we should begin to exploit this valuable
resource as soon as possible," McGovern writes. The Times (Trenton, N.J.)
