Report: Nuclear power is expected to grow through 2035
Nuclear
energy is still poised for global expansion despite challenges raised
by the Fukushima Daiichi incident in Japan last year, according to a
report from the United Nations nuclear body and the Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Development. The crisis in Japan was merely "a
speed bump" for the global nuclear industry, said Gary Dyck of the
International Atomic Energy Agency. By 2035, the world's nuclear
capacity is expected to increase by 44% to 99%, while nuclear capacity
in East Asia is expected to grow by 125% to 185%, with China, India,
Russia and South Korea posing the strongest growth, the report stated. Reuters
