Fertel: Safety is U.S. nuclear industry's top priority
The
U.S. nuclear industry is working to enhance the safety of its nuclear
plants and is proactively applying lessons from the Fukushima Daiichi
incident in Japan, writes Marvin Fertel, president and CEO of the
Nuclear Energy Institute. Nuclear plants are already equipped with
several emergency generators, backup off-site power supplies and battery
banks, yet their operators are still increasing safety layers by adding
or ordering major equipment. "To continue to reap its benefits and move
toward American energy independence, we must and we will ensure that
nuclear energy facilities operate safely," Fertel writes. CNN
