Jaczko urges NRC to reform nuclear plant safety standards
The
Nuclear Regulatory Commission should reform its safety standards one
year after the Fukushima Daiichi incident in Japan to address "high
consequence" events, NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko said. The Japanese
facility most likely would have met the NRC's safety requirements
because the incident's immediate health effects were "very close to
nothing," Jaczko said. The mass evacuations and the destruction of
reactors, however, were "clearly unacceptable," he added. The New York Times (tiered subscription model)
